KOKOMO, Ind. – Behind a balanced attack, the Indiana University Kokomo men's basketball team cruised past the Pomeroys of St. Mary of the Wood College on Tuesday night. The Cougars 83-66 victory moves them to 6-2 overall on the season and 2-1 in River States Conference action.
Unselfish play and pressure defense was the recipe tonight as the Cougars assisted on 21 of their 32 made field goals and held the Pomeroys to just 37 percent shooting from the field. The 21 assists is the most in a game this season for IUK.
The Cougars had five players score in double figures led by
Allante Harper with 14. Desean Hamptn added 12 points, five rebounds, and a game-high four blocked shots.
Jaylen Gilbert saw his first action of the season and the senior scored 10 points in just 11 minutes of action against the Pomeroys.
Julien Hunter also contributed 10 points off the bench for the Cougars while
Hunter White chipped in with 10 points as well.
Darian Porch got the scoring started for the Cougars on their opening possession of the game, scoring off an assist from White. At the 13:57 mark, White split the Pomeroy defense for the dunk giving IU Kokomo the 8-7 lead, a lead that would last the rest of the game.
Leading 14-11 in the opening half, the Cougars went on a 12-2 run that extended their lead to 13 points at 26-13. A three-pointer by Jadyn McHugh would cut the SMWC deficit to single digits at seven, with 3:30 left to play in the half but a 12-3 run from the Cougars to end the half would increase the IUK lead to 42-25 at halftime.
11 of Harper's team-high 14 came in the first half as the Cougars shot 57 percent from the field and assisted on 10 of their 15 made field goals.
Back-to-back dunks from
Julien Hunter gave the Cougars their first 20-point lead of the night with 16:29 to go in the game.
Zach Rinehart, who got his first start of the season tonight gave IU Kokomo its largest lead of the game with a layup at the 6:19 mark to put the Cougars up 26. Rinehart finished with six points and two rebounds.
The Pomeroys would cut into the lead but the final margin of 17 points is as close as they would get. The loss drops SMWC to 1-8 on the year.
IU Kokomo will return to action after the Thanksgiving holiday as they travel to Kingsport, Tennessee to compete in The Show. The Cougars will take on Warner University (FL) on Saturday before battling Washing Adventist on Sunday.
