KOKOMO, Ind. – A strong second half from the Indiana University Kokomo men's basketball team propelled them to an 81-58 victory over Oakland City University on Tuesday night. The Cougars posted 49 points in the second half, their highest point total in a half this season.
The win is the fourth straight for the Cougars and improves their record to 9-2 on the season and 3-1 in River States Conference action.
Trequan Spivey put on a show tonight, scoring at-will from the start of the game. The senior finished with a season-high 31 points, just two off his career-high. Spivey shot 47 percent from the field and was 13-of-14 from the charity stripe.
IU Kokomo played from behind most of the first half, falling behind early 5-0. Spivey converted a pair of free throws at the 14:55 mark to even things at nine. The Cougars first lead came with 9:04 left in the opening half when Spivey knocked down two more free throws to make the score 20-18. A triple from the Mighty Oaks gave them a 21-20 lead with 8:33 to go and Oakland City would hang on to the lead for the remainder of the half.
The Cougars trailed 34-32 going into halftime.
In the first five minutes of the second half, the Cougars took command of the game, using a 13-4 run to take a 45-38 lead, one they would never relinquish. IU Kokomo continued to pour it on as Spivey gave them their first 20 point lead of the game with two free throws. With 3:13 to go,
Hunter Jackson drained a three, putting IU Kokomo in front by 25 points, their largest lead of the night. Chiris Chin turned a
Noah Harris steal into two points with 1:07 left for the Cougars' final bucket of the night.
Allanter Harper got going in the Cougars's strong second half, scoring 16 of his 18 total points in the final 20 minutes. The Indianapolis, Indiana native led the team with three steals. The Cougars nabbed a season-high 11 steals against the Mighty Oaks.
Harris recorded his third double-figure scoring effort tonight as the freshman was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor and 1-of-1 from the free throw line for 11 points.
Desean Hampton was the fourth Cougar in double figures, scoring 12 points.
Chin provided a spark off the bench, playing 19 minutes, scoring four points, and grabbing a team-high six rebounds.
The Cougars will return to action on Saturday as they host Midway inside the Student Activities & Events Center. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
