UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. – The Indiana University Kokomo men's basketball team opened the season Friday night with an impressive 90-64 win over Governors State on their home court.
Hunter White and
Zach Rinehart paced the Cougar offense, as both scored 16 points. Rinehart had ten rebounds for a double-double to open the season. White had four assists and four boards to go along with the 16 points.
Darian Porch was the only other double-digit scorer for the Cougs, scoring 12 points on 5-9 shooting from the field.
Hunter Jackson was 3-5 from three-point range to finish with nine points.
Xavier Hines opened the scoring Friday night, hitting a jump-shot on the Cougars first possession of the game for a 2-0 lead. A
Darian Porch jumper extended the lead to ten less than four minutes into the game. Five-straight points from the Jaguars trimmed the IUK lead to three at 20-17, but that was as close as they got for the remainder of the game.
IU Kokomo led 32-25 with 4:10 remaining before closing the half on 10-2 run to take a 42-27 lead into halftime.
The Cougars scored the first five points of the second half to extend their lead to 20. The Jaguars trailed by 15 at 50-35 before IU Kokomo three-pointers on consecutive possessions from Wendell DeMeyers and
Hunter Jackson, re-establishing a 21 point lead with 16 minutes to go.
Hunter Jackson would cash in again from deep a short time later, this time extending the IUK lead to 25 at 60-35. With IU Kokomo leading 69-40,
Julien Hunter drilled a pair of free throws to give the Cougars their first 30-point lead of the night and season.
From then on, the Jaguars were only able to get within 23, as IU Kokomo cruised to a 90-64 opening night win at Governors State.
The Cougars will return to the court tomorrow afternoon to close out play in the Jaguars Tip-Off Classic. IUK will play Great Lakes Christian College at 2:00 P.M.
