WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The Indiana University Kokomo women's soccer team fell to the University of the Cumberlands Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the NAIA National Championship.
The Cumberlands controlled possession for much of Thursday's matchup, especially early on. The Patriots had three shots in the opening 17 minutes, but Cougar goalkeeper Kailee Moore made saves on the two shots on goal.
The Patriots were able to find the back of the net in the 22nd minute, and would score shortly later in the 26th minute to take a 2-0 lead.
IU Kokomo was whistled for a questionable foul in the box in the 30th minute, awarding the Cumberlands a penalty-kick. The Patriots converted on the PK for a 3-0 lead with 15 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Cougars earned a corner kick in the 39th minute, but nothing came of it and the Cumberlands led 3-0 at halftime.
Less than ten minutes into the second half, the Patriots managed to tack on to their lead. The Cumberlands scored in the 54th minute to extend their lead to 4-0.
Keely Hoopingarner sent a shot wide-left of the goal from just outside of the box, on what was the Cougars best chance of the match.
Neither team would score for the remainder of the match, as the Cumberlands held on to beat IU Kokomo 4-0 in the Cougars first-ever NAIA National Championship appearance.
Kailee Moore had seven saves for the Cougs, and
Erica Bolinger had one.
