Baseball Wins a Pair to Complete Series Sweep of Ohio Christian

KOKOMO, Ind. – Two shutouts led to a series sweep for the Indiana University Kokomo baseball team in its first River States Conference series of the year against Ohio Christian. After taking game one of the series, 5-0, the Cougars swept Saturday's doubleheader with scores of 10-0 and 1-0. IU Kokomo moves to 7-6 on the season and 3-0 in RSC action.

Game One Key Moments
  • Pat Mills ripped a stand-up double off the left field wall and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Dylan Steele to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead after one inning.
  • Riley Garczynski led off the third frame with his first home run of the season, giving IUK a 2-0 advantage.
  • Mills and Steele reached and scored on a two-RBI double from Noah Hurlock. Dylan Janke singled to put runners at the corners. Thomas Obergfell loaded the bases after drawing a walk. Sean Becker picked up an RBI as he walked, scoring Hurlock. Bryce Lenz was hit by a pitch and Garczynski walked, both picking up an RBI. Mills plated Becker on a sacrifice fly to end the third, giving the Cougars an 8-0 lead.
  • IUK starter Ben Harris allowed his first hit of the game in the top of the fourth. The Trailblazers would load the bases, but Harris pitched out of the jam to keep the shutout intact.
  • Hurlock led off the home half of the fourth with a double to centerfield and would move up 90 feet on a passed ball with nobody out. Janke picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly to score Hurlock, putting the Cougars ahead, 9-0.
  • Harris retired the Trailblazers in order in the top of the seventh.
  • Luke Barnes came on to pinch hit in the bottom of the seventh and drew a leadoff walk to get things started. After back-to-back singles from Tucker Platt and Becker loaded the bases, Bryce Lenz delivered the final blow, a shot into the right centerfield gap that scored Barnes to end the game via the 10-run rule.
Game One Pitching
  • Harris picked up his third win of the season to improve his record to 3-1. The righty tossed a complete game, allowing just one hit and striking out five.
Game Two Key Moments
  • Jack Leverenz opened the second inning with a single to left center and would steal second to move into scoring position. Luke Hanson executed a sacrifice bunt to move Leverenz up 90 feet with one out. Platt lifted a deep fly ball to centerfield, allowing the Cougars to score their lone run of the game.
  • Freshman JT Holton got the start on the bump for the Cougars and retired the first 15 batters he faced.
  • Holton allowed his first baserunner via a walk in the sixth inning. A groundout put an OCU baserunner in scoring position, but the Cougars later erased the baserunner when Hanson threw behind the runner, eventually ending with Platt tagging the runner out at third. With the bases clear after the pickoff, Holton issued his second walk of the inning but was able to escape the inning with no damage done.
  • Holton left the game after six complete and gave way to Ryan Beck who closed the door on the Trailblazers. Ohio Christian recorded its first and only hit of the game in the top of the seventh.
