BECKLEY, W.V. – The Cougar men's basketball team won an absolute thriller Saturday afternoon on the road, knocking off West Virginia Tech 64-63 thanks to a
Hunter White go-ahead bucket with 28 seconds remaining.
The win is IU Kokomo's fourth-straight, and moves their record to 15-5 overall and 9-1 in River States Conference play.
Hunter White led the Cougars Saturday afternoon, stuffing the stat-sheet as he is known to do. White had a 16 point, 10 rebound double-double, to go along with five assists and just one turnover. Sophomore forward
Noah Harris had a huge 16 points off the bench on 6-7 shooting from the field and as well as four free-throws.
Darian Porch had 11 points and seven rebounds, while
Julien Hunter and
Xavier Hines each added eight points.
West Virginia Tech started the game strong, scoring the first seven points for a 7-0 lead. The Golden Bears extended their lead to ten at 13-3, but the Cougars would slowly crawl back into the game. A triple from
Hunter White would cut the deficit to three points halfway through the first half.
IU Kokomo trailed 26-22 before the Cougars went on a 12-0 run. All four of the Cougars field goals on the run came from beyond-the-arc, as White drilled one,
Darian Porch knocked one down, and
Xavier Hines hit two, giving IUK a 34-26 lead with 3:16 to go in the first half. IU Kokomo took a 36-33 lead into halftime.
The Golden Bears hit a three-pointer of their own on their opening possession of the second half to tie the game, and would take their first lead of the half at 40-38. West Virginia Tech maintained a small lead for much of the second half, and would extend it to six points with 5:42 remaining.
IU Kokomo immediately responded with five-straight points to pull back within a point and show they were not done yet. After drawing a foul,
Darian Porch knocked down a pair from the charity-stripe to tie the game at 58. An old-fashioned three-point play from WVU Tech's Andrew Work on the ensuing possession gave the Golden Bears a 61-58 lead with 2:04 to go.
Darian Porch drilled another pair of free-throws to trim the deficit to a point. The Cougars got a stop and a rebound to secure a shot at the lead, and
Noah Harris found fellow Noblesville grad
Xavier Hines for a deep-two, and Hines knocked it down for a 62-61 lead with 1:13 remaining. Bryce Radford of WVU Tech knocked down a tough jumper with 44 seconds left to regain the lead for the Golden Bears.
Hunter White got to the paint and managed to score the game-winning basket with 28 seconds left. The Cougars forced a WVU Tech turnover to seal the game and leave Beckley, West Virginia, with a 64-63 win.
The Cougars will return home to prepare for two home games in three days, beginning this Thursday against Carlow University. Tip-off is set for 7:30 P.M.
