KOKOMO, Ind. - The IU Kokomo men's basketball team played their first home game of the 2023-24 season on Monday night, where the team convincingly beat East-West University by a final score of 95-73. With the victory, the Cougars record remains flawless at 6-0 on the season.
From tip-off it was clear which team was in command. The Cougars started off the game with a 10-0 scoring run through the first four minutes, punctuated by a three-pointer by transfer
Max Newman. IUK continued to pile on layups and free throws to lead 23-4 by the midpoint of the first half.
The dominant first half was closed by back-to-back layups by
Hunter Jackson and
Max Newman to give the Cougars a 41-18 lead at halftime.
IU Kokomo's scoring barrage continued in the second half as East-West continued to keep up with the Cougars, who would lead by as many as 39 points.
The visitors managed to pick up their offense in the closing moments of the game, but it wasn't enough for a comeback, and IU Kokomo held a 95-73 lead at the buzzer.
Six Cougars scored in double-figures in the victory, led by
Max Newman with 14, closely followed by
Chris Chin with 12.
Evan Kretz and
Joseph Annan Jr. both scored 11, while
Hunter Jackson and
Dell Demeyers scored 10 each.
The Cougars will be back in action this weekend for "The Show", a neutral-site tournament played in Kingsport, Tennessee, before their first conference game against Indiana University East on Nov. 29th.
