Cougars Drop Heartbreaker at IU East to Open River States Conference Play

RICHMOND, Ind. - The IU Kokomo women's basketball team lost a heartbreaker at IU East Tuesday night, as the Red Wolves knocked down a go-ahead three-pointer with 11 seconds remaining to take down the Cougars. With the loss, IU Kokomo's record is now .500 at 3-3.

The first half of Tuesday's RSC matchup proved to be a tale of two quarters, as IUK led 22-8 after a quarter before IUE answered by outscoring IU Kokomo 20-9 in the second period to make it a 31-28 halftime lead for the Cougars.

IU Kokomo extended the lead back to seven at 40-33 in the early minutes of the second half before an 11-0 run from the Red Wolves gave them a four-point lead, their first lead of the contest. IU East led 44-42 after three quarters.

The fourth quarter was neck-and-neck throughout, as both teams seemingly traded stops or buckets, depending on the possession.

With the game tied at 56 with 2:16 remaining, a Kelsi Langley layup and 1-2 free-throws from Anna Kiser gave the Cougs a 59-56 lead. The teams each made a layup to keep the IUK lead at three, but another IUE bucket cut their deficit to one with 25 seconds remaining.

After being fouled, IUK made 1-2 from the charity stripe to make it a 62-60 lead but the Red Wolves drilled a deep trey to take a one-point lead with 11 seconds left. The Cougars advanced the ball up the floor quickly before contact forced the ball loose and the time ran out.

In the end, the Cougars came up just short in their first conference matchup of the season, a 64-62 loss on the road at IU East.

Shamaria Walker led IU Kokomo offensively with 22 points on an efficient 11-16 from the field. Kelsi Langley was the Cougars lone other double-digit scorer with 11, while Alaya Chapman had six points and 10 boards.

The Cougars will return to action on December 9th, as they will take on the Grenadiers of IU Southeast in a 1:00 PM tip-off.
