Cougars Outlast Taylor Friday in High Scoring Affair

UPLAND, Ind. - The IU Kokomo men's basketball team played their second road game in just three games Friday night, making the short trip to Upland to battle the Trojans of Taylor University, The non-conference matchup proved to be a high-scoring affair, as the Cougars out-paced Taylor and won 93-80.

With the victory, Eric Echelbarger's Cougars move to 2-1 on the season ahead of Monday's home opener. Both of IUK's wins have come on the road.

The Cougars drilled three-pointers on their first two possessions and shots of the game, first from Evan Kretz who was followed by Max Newman. IU Kokomo continued the strong start, leading by 10 at 15-5 just over four minutes into the game.

Taylor managed to pull within four of IU Kokomo on a couple different occasions in the first half, but IUK led by eight at 40-32 through 20 minutes.

Senior forward Noah Harris began the second half with just two points after going 1/4 from the field, but burst onto the scene in the second half with 26 points to help the Cougars outlast Taylor. In the final 20 minutes, Harris was 9/11 from the field and 7-7 from the charity stripe to finish with 28 points. 

IU Kokomo extended their lead to as many as 14 in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but the Trojans refused to go away without a fight. A pair of free throws trimmed their deficit to one with 6:47 to play, but the Cougars slowly extended their lead back to double-digits by the 3:27 mark.

Freshman guard Mason Lewis scored 10 points in the final minutes to help ice the game, as the Cougars left Upland with a thirteen-point, 93-80 victory.

Five IU Kokomo players scored in double-figures Friday, led by Harris with a career-high 28 points and Lewis with a career-high 17. Dell DeMyers finished with 14, while Joseph Annan Jr. added 11 and Max Newman had 10.

All five Cougars who scored in double-figures pulled down at least five rebounds each as well.

The Cougars will be back in action Monday, November 11th, as they will welcome the University of Northwestern Ohio to the SAEC for their home opener at 7:00 PM.
