BECKLEY, WV. - The Indiana University Kokomo men's basketball team saw their season come to a close Wednesday night, as they lost 83-66 at WVU Tech in the River States Conference Championship Quarterfinals.
The 2023-2024 season ends with IU Kokomo holding an overall record of 21-8, with all eight losses coming against teams from the stout River States Conference.
The Golden Bears of WVU Tech came out of the gates shooting the ball well, a stretch that continued throughout the game as they finished 15 of 30 from beyond-the-arc. The Bears were also 10-10 from the charity stripe compared to 7-15 from the Cougars.
WVU Tech had limited trouble scoring the ball Wednesday night, jumping out a to a quick 8-2 lead over IU Kokomo with a pair of triples in the opening minutes.
Another Golden Bear deep-ball made it a 10-point IUK deficit with 11:02 remaining in the first half, but the Cougars refused to go away quietly.
Trailing by as many as 11 on multiple occasions, a
Hunter Jackson three-pointer trimmed the deficit to two at 28-26 with six minutes to play in the half.
IU Kokomo tied the score at 33 apiece before a bucket from
Joseph Annan Jr. gave them their first lead of the game in the waning seconds of the opening half. The Golden Bears would knock down yet another trey before the buzzer to take a 36-35 lead into the half.
The second half started the way the first half ended, with both sides trading buckets early and often. WVU Tech built a five-point lead for some separation, but IUK immediately answered by cutting their lead to one.
Leading by one, the Golden Bears drilled threes on consecutive possessions before a fast-break bucket made it a nine-point WVUT lead with 10:12 to play.
Once the Golden Bears extended the lead to double-digits, it would remain, as WVU Tech closed out an 83-66 win over IU Kokomo to advance to the Semifinals of the RSC Championship.
Joseph Annan Jr. continued his stretch of strong play Wednesday, scoring a team-high 19 points to pace the Cougar offense. Two other Cougars scored in double-figures, as senior
Dell DeMyers added 13 points while
Chris Chin had 10.
Hunter Jackson had a team-high seven rebounds.
