Women's Basketball Completes Fourth Quarter Comeback to Defeat IU East 73-71

KOKOMO, Ind. - The IU Kokomo women's basketball team defeated the Red Wolves of IU East after overcoming a 16-point fourth quarter deficit, rising to 7-14 on the season and 4-9 in conference games.

IU East scored the first basket of the game, before Anna Kiser and Alaya Chapman scored buckets to put Kokomo in front 4-2. The Red Wolves then marched ahead to a 15-8 lead late in the quarter, and held a 17-12 lead at the end of the period.

Down 22-14 early in the second quarter, Kelsi Langley scored a jump shot, quickly followed by a layup from Anna Kiser to pull the Cougars back within four.

The Red Wolves, however, found a powerful offensive surge in the final moments of the quarter, and IU Kokomo found themselves trailing 40-28 at halftime.

To start the third quarter, Cameryn Rector dropped eight consecutive points, capped by an and-one layup, but the Cougars still struggled to keep up with their opponents, falling to a 51-36 deficit halfway through the quarter. A three-pointer from Emma Good in the final seconds of the quarter cut the Red Wolves lead to 12 going into the final period.

Down 60-44 with seven and a half minutes remaining, the Cougars finally caught fire.

Mia Catey's layup followed by a free throw and another triple by Emma Good quickly brought the Cougars back within 10. East went up 66-52, before Cameryn Rector and Anna Kiser once again cut it to 10.

After a three-point shot put IU East up 69-56, IUK went on a dominant 13-0 scoring run to tie the score with just over a minute on the clock. Each team sank two free throws to again tie the score at 71, before Olivia Dowden put the game on ice with a game-winning layup with ten seconds remaining.

Cameryn Rector was the Cougars top scorer in the victory with 19 points. Olivia Dowden's game winner gave her 10 points, and Anna Kiser recorded 14 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double.

The Cougars will be back in action this Saturday for a road contest against Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.
