KOKOMO, Ind. - The IU Kokomo women's soccer team welcomed Cincinnati-Clermont to town Friday night, and despite a short lightning delay, the match went on as planned. A UC-Clermont goal in the final seconds evened the score 2-2, as the match ended in a draw.
The match began in an extremely similar way to Wednesday's match with #15 IWU, as IU Kokomo surrendered another goal in the opening minutes of play. The Cougars of UC-Clermont scored in the third minute to take an early 1-0 lead over IU Kokomo.
Despite surrendering a number of corners and chances, IU Kokomo held UCC scoreless for the remainder of the half.Â
IU Kokomo earned a breakaway late in the first half, as freshman
Addison Waller sent a shot off the crossbar before classmate
Emily Monsour collected the rebound and escorted the ball into the back of the net. Monsour's first career goal evened the score 1-1 just prior to the halftime horn.
The Cougars of IU Kokomo seemed to dominate possession and out-chance UCC for much of the second half with nothing to show for it. That was until the 80th minute, when
Hannah Hermansen found veteran
Kelsi Hoot, who beat the Cincinnati-Clermont keeper to give the home squad a 2-1 lead with less than 10 minutes to play.
Just when it seemed as if IU Kokomo would hold on to win 2-1 over UCC, the visitors put a shot off of the post and in across the goal line as time expired. After a lengthy discussion between the referee and far-side official, it was determined the goal would count, as the match finished as a 2-2 draw.
With Friday's match being the final non-conference match of the season, the Cougars will open River States Conference play next Thursday at home against the RedStorm of Rio Grande. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM at Northwestern High School.
