Men’s Basketball Falls in Tight Neutral-Site Battle Against Lawrence Tech (Mich.)

LIVONIA, Mich. - The Indiana University Kokomo men's basketball team wrapped up a three-game stretch in Michigan to start the season Saturday, falling to Lawrence Tech in a tightly contested matchup.

THE RUNDOWN 
  • Lawrence Tech got off to a fast start Saturday, building a 14-6 lead less than five minutes into the game. IU Kokomo responded with one of their best stretches of the young season, going on a 15-0 run to take a 21-14 lead.
  • IU Kokomo held control through most of the first half, but Lawrence Tech outscored the Cougars 12-4 in the final 3:28 to take a 43-39 lead into halftime.
  • Fueled by six consecutive points from Evan Kretz, IU Kokomo quickly tied the game at 46. Eric Echelbarger's Cougars held a four-point lead before the teams were deadlocked at 61 with 8:58 remaining.
  • The Cougars answered with six straight points to take a 67-61 lead, holding the advantage into the final two minutes. IU Kokomo led Lawrence Tech 74-73 with 1:51 remaining, but Michael Afrakoff's go-ahead three-pointer gave LTU the lead for good.
  • After an empty trip to the free-throw line by the Cougars, Lawrence Tech added late points to secure an 85-81 victory, despite IU Kokomo holding much of the second-half lead.

LEADING THE CHARGE
  • Freshman guard Alonzo Clawson-Smith made his first career start Saturday and made it count, leading the team with 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting in 35 minutes.
  • Junior Joseph Annan Jr. recorded his first double-double of the season, posting 20 points and a team-high 12 rebounds despite the loss.
  • Both Evan Kretz and Patric Matson reached double figures, with Kretz contributing 13 points and Matson scoring a career-high 11.
  • Ibrahim Diakite contributed seven points and six rebounds in 20 minutes of play.
