Women's Basketball Starts Strong Before Falling by Eight at Midway Saturday

MIDWAY, Ky. - The IU Kokomo Women's Basketball team returned to the road Saturday to battle the Eagles of Midway, falling 74-66 after leading by as many as 15 in the opening quarter.

The opening quarter of Saturday's contest was dominated by the Cougars, as they outscored Midway by 11. IU Kokomo scored the first five points of the game and 18 of the first 23, jumping out to a commanding 13 point lead.

Anna Kiser would knock down a jumper to extend the Cougar lead to 15 with 1:42 remaining in the first quarter, as IUK led 26-15 after one quarter.

Just as the Cougars did in the opening quarter, Midway controlled play in the second quarter, outscoring IU Kokomo 24-12 to trail the Cougars to take a one-point lead of their own into the halftime locker room.

Midway maintained a minimal lead for the opening five minutes of the second half before IUK tied things up at 48, eventually taking their first lead of the second half with 2:59 remaining in the third quarter. A Mia Catey jumper with 30 seconds remaining in the period gave the Cougars a four-point, 57-53 lead heading into the fourth.

Catey would open the fourth the same way she ended the third, knocking down a jumper to extend the IU Kokomo lead. Midway immediately responded with a 12-0 run, giving the host Eagles a six-point lead of their own with 4:18 remaining.

Lexi DiOrio would drill a three-pointer to pull the Cougars within a point at 65-64, but the Eagles outscored IU Kokomo 9-2 in the final 2:18 to hold on for a 74-66 victory.

Four different Cougars scored in double-figures, led by junior forward Mia Catey's 18 point performance. Anna Kiser tallied her sixth double-double on the year, totaling 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Freshman guard Lexi DiOrio made her eighth career start Saturday, scoring 11 points while knocking down three treys. Cameryn Rector chipped in 10 points.

The Cougars are back on the road Tuesday, as they will head south to battle the Mighty Oaks of Oakland City. Tipoff is set for 8:30 PM ET.
