MARION, Ind. - IU Kokomo standout
Sydney Duncan entered Friday looking to close out her sophomore season with a bang in Discus, as she came into the 2025 NAIA Outdoor National Championships seeded fourth of 28 competitors in the event.
With a Shot Put National Championship already under her belt for the week, Sydney had her sights set on a third-career National Title and first outside of Shot Put.
Duncan's first throw of the afternoon sent her to the top of the charts immediately, as she delivered a personal best throw of 49.76 meters to hold an early lead.
Eventual National Champion Madison Sutton of Doane, the #1 seed entering the event, took the lead with the final throw of Flight #3 action. Her throw of 49.82 meters bested Duncan by just 0.06 meters, the difference between National Champion and National Runner-Up.
Neither Duncan or Sutton were able to better their marks in the Finals, as Sydney settled for a second-place finish to cap off a remarkable sophomore season that saw her win a pair of National Championships in Shot Put.
Head Coach
Josh Colvin had this to say when asked about Duncan's performance Friday: "Sydney had high hopes going into the Discus competition today. She went in ranked fourth before PR'ing by more than a meter and setting a new school record en-route to becoming National Runner-Up. This feat is especially impressive considering she did not even qualify for Nationals in Discus last year. Sydney set the stage for a phenomenal junior year where she will be one of the top throwers in the nation in all three outdoor throwing events."
