THE RUNDOWN
  • IU Kokomo won the first four points of the match and nine of the first 10, holding a comfortable lead for the early parts of set one. SMWC forced an IUK timeout after cutting the deficit to four, yet the Pomeroys only managed to pull within three as the Cougars took set one 25-20.
  • The Cougars led early in the second before SMWC used a 4-0 spurt to take a 12-11 lead. The two sides traded points and the lead often in a highly-competitive second set, as it was the Pomeroys who earned the first set point. Both teams had opportunities to win the set, yet it was SMWC who evened the match with a 29-27 set two win.
  • 13th year head coach Heather Hayes's team seemed to put the second set loss behind them rather quickly, as they started the third set strong. The Cougars led in a big way before allowing SMWC to make a push, eventually taking the third 25-20 for a 2-1 lead over the host Pomeroys.
  • IU Kokomo kept the momentum going early in the fourth, but Saint Mary of the Woods held a 15-12 lead just past the midway point of the set. Trailing 18-13, the Cougars reeled off six-straight points for a one-point lead of their own.
  • The Cougars and Pomeroys found themselves knotted at 23 apiece before Mya Grigsby recorded a pair of kills and #20 IU Kokomo won three of the next four points to win the set 26-24 and the match 3-1.
