Wedmore Tops Division I Competitors in Shot Put and Weight Throw as Cougars Compete at Two In-State Meets

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind./UPLAND, Ind. - The IU Kokomo men's indoor track and field team competed in another split-squad weekend inside the Hoosier State Friday and Saturday ahead of an impending snowstorm that began dumping snow across the area Saturday evening.

THE RUNDOWN
  • Senior thrower Gabe Wedmore continued his strong start to the season over the weekend, finishing sixth in the shot put at the Crossroads of America Invitational ahead of 11 Division I competitors as the top NAIA finisher. He remains seeded No. 1 in the River States Conference and No. 3 nationally in the NAIA.
  • Wedmore also excelled in the weight throw in Indianapolis, finishing sixth ahead of nine Division I competitors while ranking as the NAIA's top finisher. He is currently No. 2 in the River States Conference and 26th nationally.
  • Three other Cougars finished inside the top 15 in the weight throw, with Isaac Ireland placing 10th, Evan Gaylor 11th, and Seth Ireland 15th. Isaac recorded a personal-best mark of 15.68 meters, moving him to fifth all-time in program history, while Gaylor followed just 0.04 meters behind.
  • Isaac Ireland, a sophomore from North Miami High School, also finished 11th in the weight throw with a mark of 14.84 meters.
  • Freshman distance runner Jeremiah Miles continued his impressive debut season over the weekend, setting a new school record in the 5,000 meters at the Crossroads of America Invitational with a time of 15:35.77. His performance, which was good for third place ahead of two Division I competitors, also marked a personal best and a freshman record.
  • Upperclassman Rico Ortiz delivered strong performances in the 600 meters and 400 meters, finishing 16th in the 600 meters with a time of 1:23.70 and 20th in the 400 meters with a time of 50.83. Both marks are personal bests, with the 400-meter time ranking as the second-fastest in program history and the 600-meter time as the fourth-fastest.

THE ROAD AHEAD 
  • The Cougars return to action next Saturday for another split-squad weekend, competing at the University of Louisville (PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational) and Olivet Nazarene University (ONU Indoor Invitational).
