THE RUNDOWN
  • Senior Cam Howard got the start for IU Kokomo and set the tone for the Cougars early, striking out six across four innings of work, allowing just one run.
  • AJ Burkhalter came in and was just as dominant, allowing just one base runner in his two frames on the bump.
  • The rest of the bullpen followed suit as Jacob Forson, Owen Norris, and Cameron Heaney closed out the game allowing only one more run.
  • The story of the day though, was Kentucky Christian's starting pitcher Andrew Combs, who threw seven no-hit innings for the Knights, although he did surrender seven walks in his outing.
  • However, once he left the game in the eighth, the Cougar hitters finally started clicking. Riley Sands led the inning off with a single through the right side, moving up to second when Jedvier Garcia was hit by a pitch. Noah Wolf then laid down a bunt that was thrown away by the Knights allowing Sands to touch home and even the score at one.
  • With two runners in scoring position, Brock Taulman stepped in and ripped a double down the left field line that scored both Garcia and Wolf, giving IUK their first lead of the day. Corbin Napier followed with a walk, and he and Taulman advanced 90 feet on a Nate Montgomery sacrifice bunt. That laid the way for a two-RBI single off the bat of Payton Hankins, making the score 5-1 headed to the bottom of the eighth.
