KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The Indiana University Kokomo men's basketball team extended its win streak to three games with a 56-44 victory over Washington Adventist University on Sunday afternoon. The Cougars are now 8-2 on the season and are just one win away from tying their longest winning streak of the season.
IU Kokomo's offense struggled in the opening minutes of the game, falling behind 6-0, forcing head coach
Eric Echelbarger to call his first timeout of the game.
Trequan Spivey got the Cougars on the board at the 15:13 mark, scoring his only points of the first half.
A layup by the Shock made it 10-4 with 13:28 left in the half but a shot 7-0 burst from the Cougars capped off by a layup from
Julien Hunter off the
Hunter White steal gave IUK their first lead of the contest. With 8:26 to go in the half,
Allante Harper knocked down one of his two triples to put the Cougars up by four, their largest lead of the half. With things knotted at 16 with just over six minutes to play in the opening frame, Washington Adventist outscored the Cougars 15-7 to close out the half and take a 31-23 lead into the intermission.
Harper and
Desean Hampton each scored eight points for the Cougars in the half. Hampton was 4-of-6 from the floor and had two assists, two rebounds, and a steal.
The Cougars continued to trail for the first eight minutes of the second half but a 10-0 run gave them the lead back with 10:59 left in the game. Harper and
Chris Chin each had four points during the run while White had the final bucket of the run to put IUK up by three.
IU Kokomo led 48-41 with five minutes to go and the Cougars' defense picked up its intensity, holding the Shock to one bucket for the remainder of the game, a three that came after Spivey converted an old fashion three-point play with 2:10 left to put the Cougars up by 15, their largest lead of the game.
Hampton added six points in the second half for a game-high total of 14 in the win to go along with four blocks, three assists, and six rebounds. Spivey led the Cougars in scoring in the second half with eight points to finish with 10, the senior was a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor in the final 20 minutes.
The Cougars will return to River States Conference action on Tuesday as they host Oakland City at the Student Activities & Events Center. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
