Late Run Leads Men's Basketball to Ninth Straight Victory

KOKOMO, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo men's basketball team earned its ninth straight victory on senior day this afternoon as the Cougars held off a tough Rio Grande team to win 65-58. IU Kokomo improves to 21-3 on the season and 11-1 in River States Conference action. 
 
Trequan Spivey played all 40 minutes and led all scorers with 19 points. The senior was 5-of-11 from the field and 6-of-6 from the foul line. Spivey is now just five points away from 2,000 for his career. 
 
The first 10 minutes of the opening half was a back-and-forth affair. With 8:02 to play in the half, Zach Rinehart hit one-of-two free throws to put the Cougars in front. Allante Harper gave IU Kokomo a five-point lead with just over four minutes left but Rio Grande answered with a triple to make it a one possession game. Xavier Hines knocked in three on the next possession on a kickout from Desean Hampton to put IUK back up five with 3:32 to play in the half. IUK would lead the rest of the half and take a 28-23 lead into the lockerroom. 
 
Rio Grande came out swinging in the second half, starting on a 10-0 run to take a 33-28 advantage. The Redstorm remained in control for the next eight minutes but it was then the Cougars began to mount a comeback. Hines knocked down another shot from long distance to cut the IUK deficit to just one point. A pair of free throws from Allante Harper with 6:09 to play gave the Cougars a 50-49 lead. 
 
Trailing 56-55 with 3:56 to play and an eight game winning streak on the line, the Cougars ended the game on a 10-2 run to seal the 65-58 victory over Rio Grande. 
 
Hampton finished the game with 18 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Hines added 10 points off the bench on a season-high 29 minutes. 
 
Another quick turnaround the for the Cougars this week as they host Brescia University on Tuesday at the Student Activities and Events Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
