Women's Basketball Earns Gritty Victory Over Brescia to Snap Three Game Skid

KOKOMO, Ind. - The IU Kokomo women's basketball team defeated Brescia University on Saturday afternoon, snapping a three-game losing streak with an 82-76 victory. With the win, the Cougars hold a record of 6-14 this season with a 3-9 mark in conference games.

IUK struck first on Anna Kiser's layup, before the Bearcats scored seven straight to lead by five. The Cougars found themselves down by 11 six minutes into the game, but a layup by Hannah Hodgen and two three-pointers from Anya Friend brought them back within six.

Early in the second quarter while trailing 29-18, IU Kokomo went on an 8-0 scoring run, punctuated by Mia Catey free throws and a Hannah Hodgen layup, to trail by just three.

Brescia pulled ahead to a 34-28 lead, but the Cougars outscored the Bearcats 10-0 in the final two minutes of the quarter to take a 38-34 lead into halftime.

To start the second half, IU Kokomo continued their scoring run with a free throw by Alaya Chapman and a layup from Cameryn Rector to take a seven point lead. At the midpoint of the quarter, Kristen Ridner drilled a three-pointer to give the Cougars a 49-40 lead.

The Cougars were in possession of a commanding 57-47 lead entering the fourth quarter, which was increased to a 12 point lead with Alaya Chapman's quarter-opening layup. The Cougars maintained their double-digit lead until Brescia stormed back to trail by just five with three and a half minutes remaining.

The final moments of the game were a gritty defensive struggle defined by fouls and subsequent free throws, and IUK ultimately held on for an 82-76 victory.

Olivia Dowden was the Cougars' top scorer in the victory with 18 points. Alaya Chapman scored 13 points, followed by Anna Kiser and Anya Friend with 11 points each, and Cameryn Rector with 10.

The Cougars will be back in action next week for two RSC matchups, first against IU East at home on Tuesday, followed by a road game against Saint Mary-of-the-Woods on Saturday.
