MARION, Ind. - Three more IU Kokomo student-athletes competed on day two of the 2024 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships Thursday, hosted by Indiana Wesleyan in nearby Marion.
Freshman
Sydney Duncan capped an ever-impressive freshman season with an eighth-place finish in Shot Put, earning her NAIA All-American honors for the second time in her young career. She was also named an NAIA All-American in Shot Put at Indoor Nationals, and is IU Kokomo's seventh track & field All-American since 2021.
Duncan's counting mark of 14.04 meters came on her second of three throws in flight three action, putting her in seventh heading into the finals. Seventh-place finisher Alecia Parker of Bethel (Ind.) also threw a 14.04 in the finals, but her second-best throw was better than Duncan's to give her seventh.
Sydney's second-best throw came into play once more, as Concordia's (Neb.) Abigail Gerber threw a 14.04, but Duncan's second-best throw of 13.92 meters bested Gerber's to take eighth. This proved to be the difference, as the top-eight finishers in each event earn All-American honors.
Maddie Dotlich found herself seeded 20th in the Women's 5,000 meter Racewalk, but improved upon her seeding by four spots with a 16th-place finish. Dotlich crossed the finish line in a time of 30:28.76.
Ethan Carmean and
Nick Anders each competed in the Men's 5,000 meter Racewalk following Dotlich. Carmean would finish 12th with a time of 26:01.62, while Anders would be disqualified due to an accumulation of red flags.
